What is a split system air conditioner?
It’s Australia’s most popular type of air conditioning system for many reasons. Split system models are preferred because they’re the most energy-efficient, they’re affordable and the most appealing bonus, is that they’re quiet. This model of air conditioner literally has a system that is split into two main parts. An air outlet unit that is inside and a compressor box that is fixed outside. The unit inside sucks out the hot air and replaces it with cold air that is conditioned in a pipe containing refrigerant gas. The pipe connects the two split systems. Split system ACs are usually attached high on a wall so that the outdoor unit can be installed on the same wall outside of the room or area in which the AC will work. What size air conditioning system do I need?
This is all dependant on the size of the room you need to cool. The general expectation is that you’ll need 0.15 kilowatts (kw) per square metre. A small room that is between 10-20 square metres will need an AC with minimum capacity of 2.8kw. A large room that is between 40-60 square metres will require a 5.6kw capacity system. Powertrip Electrical Services advises that you opt for a slightly bigger capacity unit, but only by a small margin, when choosing a specific AC unit. How to maintain your aircon system?
After one of our licensed electricians has successfully installed your split system AC, there are a few things you can do to make sure it stays in good condition. You might spot some concerning signs and not know whether it’s time to replace or repair your air conditioning unit. We can help you with everything from installation through to regular servicing. Anyone is capable of the basic maintenance, in our opinion. Here are four things to do on a regular but not super frequent basis:
- Inspect and clean your filters
- Wipe any dust or dirt that accumulates on the system
- Check that the outside unit has a free flow of air that isn’t obstructed by shrubbery or any other items

It’s VERY important that you use a licensed AC electrician to service your units because it is a technical and potentially dangerous process. It’s not enough that an electrician has done hundreds of installations before, they must have a valid license. The handling of refrigerant gases (explained above) in AC units without a license is illegal. Australia’s law is very clear about who is or isn’t qualified to handle gases because they can put your family and your home in direct risk. Since it is illegal to use an unlicensed installer, you will lose your product warranty.
